Starkey Hearing Technologies, established in 1967 by William Austin as Professional Hearing Aid Service (an all-make hearing instrument repair service), is a world leader in the design, development and distribution of comprehensive hearing solutions. In August, 1970 Austin purchased Starkey Laboratories, a small earmold company at the time, from Harold Starkey, merged it with Professional Hearing Aid Service and retained the Starkey name. From the beginning, they have believed in using superior hearing technology as a means to something even greater — creating meaningful connections between people and their worlds. With 21 facilities in more than 100 markets around the world, they are an industry leader in hearing instrument manufacturing, creating top quality diagnostic equipment, hearing protection products, wireless technology and unique hearing solutions for every environment.
Throughout the years Starkey has been a leader in the hearing aid industry, being the first to introduce the the first 30-day free trial and the first one-year warranty in 1973 , and the world’s first directional custom ITE (in the ear) hearing aids in 1975. In 1983, President Ronald Reagan was fit with a pair of Intra hearing aids — the first canal instruments. With this public announcement, sales rose across the country, and helped reduce some of the stigma associated with hearing aids.
For more than 50 years, William Austin has been providing the gift of hearing to people in need, and to formalize their philanthropic efforts, he officially founded Starkey Hearing Foundation in 1984. He had a simple premise:
“Alone we can’t do much. Together we can change the world.”
Starkey’s worldwide headquarters is located at 6700 Washington Avenue S., Eden Prairie, MN 55344-3476.
